The downtown revitalization took shape through years of thoughtful planning, public engagement, and visionary leadership—it was not by accident. To allow the 15th Street widening to move forward as currently proposed would be a disservice to that same spirit of community-driven design.

The community in Washington is voicing their concerns about a project proposed by the NCDOT.

Last month, I stood in the aftermath of that destruction with two friends from Washington, NC. We had traveled west to join Samaritan’s Purse, an organization I had never heard of until this year. Through a friend in my Bible Study, I learned about their mission: to serve communities in crisis in the name of Christ. And so, I said yes.

Have you ever circled around Downtown Washington looking for that “perfect” parking spot? I know I sure have. Members of our community often say that we need more parking, but what if I told you that the solution isn’t about adding more spots?

My purpose in curating this exhibition was not only to showcase the essence of the soldier but also to shed light on the challenges faced by our veterans during their transition. I believe the photographs selected are not just snapshots; they are windows into the soul of service and sacrifice each telling a story of courage and camaraderie.

Ellen Brabo is a local artist and Army veteran who is making it her mission to put a stop to suicide among members of the military. She spent time in the military capturing images of our brave soldiers, and now she wants to give back. Erin Jenkins has more of her story.
